When and What: This is Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis around 1927. This picture is not as old as most of the others I have and the automobile has taken over, roads are being built outside the city to an increasing number of places, including to Mound. This is about the same vintage as the second photo I have of Mound from the high school. Notice the sign on the building saying "Minnetonka Boat Works" Wayzata. You will notice the Orpheum theater across the street. This is near where Mr. and Mrs. Andrews had their business and would commute often by rail to Mound where all of their girls, LaVerne, Maxene, and Patty Andrews were born. Raised in Mound, the girls would also commute to the Orpheum whenever possible and perform on stage before and between films. In those days it was common to have live acts when films were not being shown. The Andrews Sisters would eventually become internationally famous and the most popular female group of the recording industry's pre-rock era. |

Picturing Lake Minnetonka
A Post Card History by James W. Ogland and published by the
Minnesota Historical Society. Graphics of far greater quality and variety
than anything you'll find on the net, unless of course you visit the Minnesota
Historical Society. The book is filled with fascinating historical information
about the Lake Minnetonka area. A great gift for anyone who lives near the
"Great Waters" or once did. It is also a great way to support your
historical society and works of local historical importance. I know this sounds like an advertisement but I'm not affiliated in any way to anyone involved with "Picturing Lake Minnetonka". I love history, and believe it's important. If you like what I have on this site you'll probably want this book. |
