When and What: From 1915 up to about 1930? ... These pictures span a few years. The first is Excelsior I think around 1920 and while they have a nice concrete sidewalk, the road looks like packed dirt but maybe could be bituminus treated. (Thick liquid oil from an oil tank truck with gravel spread over it and packed down by traffic... not the same as bituminus paved roads as most people know them today.) The next picture is an express steam boat on the lake obviously. The third one is of a recent local engineering feat, the "Narrows" bridge, which crosses the channel of the same name connecting the upper and lower lake systems of Minnetonka. The last picture is of the once famous Excelsior Amusement Park during it's golden age... 1920's. |

Picturing Lake Minnetonka
A Post Card History by James W. Ogland and published by the
Minnesota Historical Society. Graphics of far greater quality and variety
than anything you'll find on the net, unless of course you visit the Minnesota
Historical Society. The book is filled with fascinating historical information
about the Lake Minnetonka area. A great gift for anyone who lives near the
"Great Waters" or once did. It is also a great way to support your
historical society and works of local historical importance. I know this sounds like an advertisement but I'm not affiliated in any way to anyone involved with "Picturing Lake Minnetonka". I love history, and believe it's important. If you like what I have on this site you'll probably want this book. |
